Welcome to Lawnswood School. Here, we’re bringing together colleagues from Computing, Maths, Science and Technology. Although we’re spread across venues, this is still very much one Red Kite Day, a chance to connect, collaborate and learn together through a programme of subject-specific sessions.

10:10-11:00	Keynote - Professor Leigh Hoath, Science Education, Leeds Trinity University 'Finding Hope in a Challenging World' This session will look at the challenges that are increasingly pulling schools and teachers to face competing demands whilst meeting the needs of children and young people. In times of great change from a technology, political and curriculum review, we will focus on the importance of constructive hope and where education, our schools and our subjects can support this.

Live Keynote Speaker

Leigh is a former teacher and now Professor of Science Education at Leeds Trinity University. She is also the Co-Founder of the charity Climate Adapted Pathways for Education (CAPE) - an alliance of researchers, educators, schools and partners across the UK who are working to change today’s education for tomorrow’s climate. She led the content design for the BBC’s The Regenerators education campaign, their Blue Planet Live resources and is the education consultant to the world’s largest chemical company. Leigh holds a number of additional roles in education – including MAT Vice Chair of Trustees, Member of two MATS, former Chair of the Association for Science Education and is currently editor of two practice focussed journals. She has written a number of books for primary and secondary education and holds National Teaching Fellowship. She balances work with the antics of 12 year old twins and pets.

Maths

Preparing students for the increase in Problem Solving in the new Curriculum

The new curriculum will be launched in Spring 2027 and will be first taught in September 2028. We know from the initial recommendations, the choice of curriculum drafters and their preparatory work that there will be an expectation on teachers to increase the proportion of problem solving and reasoning in lessons. In the session on Red Kite Day we will be exploring Problem Solving and how we can make this accessible for all students.

Food & Nutrition

Developing food presentation skills for exam students

Session 1: Making elements for the plate (working in pairs, each pair will make some elements to use for the plating)

Session 2: Using the elements made earlier, each pair can have a go at trying different plating techniques (post demonstration).

Arrival and Parking Information

There are two entrances to the school, either through the Main Entrance of the school which is off Otley Road, or through the gate at the back of the school, off the Ring Road, please note, this is an entrance only. There will be plenty of parking on site and if the carpark is full there will be an overflow carpark on the playground at the back of the school.

Please wear your school lanyard and report to the Main Reception on arrival.
