Boats, DNA and Chemistry Races
Posted 19th May 2025
Thirteen schools from across Red Kite Alliance came together on Thursday for a vibrant and inspiring science competition hosted at Lawnswood School.
Year 7 students from Ralph Thoresby, Crawshaw, Temple Learning Academy, Lighthouse, Benton Park, Harrogate Grammar School, Leeds Jewish Free School, Allerton Grange, Ilkley Grammar School, South Craven, Lawnswood, Rossett and Roundhay took part in a day of hands-on science challenges, all competing for the honour of taking home the coveted golden microscope trophy.
Four groups of Red Kite Teacher Training science trainees designed and led a range of engaging activities. The physics team, dressed in nautical-themed outfits, challenged students to construct boats from paper and other materials to test how much mass they could hold before sinking - an activity that ties in with Red Kite Alliance's new Ogden Trust partnership, offering exciting enrichment opportunities for students. The biology team ran a code-breaking DNA challenge, where students solved clues to construct models of DNA. Chemistry trainees organised a fast-paced card race, where teams completed a series of practical and problem-solving tasks to earn points, an activity so well received that Ralph Thoresby requested the materials to use in lessons at their own school.
Ralph Thoresby was crowned the overall winners, securing the top spot and proudly taking home the golden microscope. Allerton Grange came in a strong second, with Crawshaw closely behind in third.
Individual category winners also received recognition: Crawshaw triumphed in the biology activity, with Lighthouse and Allerton Grange in second and third respectively. South Craven led the way in the chemistry task, followed by Crawshaw and Allerton Grange. The physics challenge saw Allerton Grange take first place, Lighthouse second, and Rossett third.
A special award for teamwork was presented to Lighthouse School, who impressed judges with their collaboration and enthusiasm throughout the day.
Trainees demonstrated exceptional professionalism and creativity, drawing praise from across the Alliance. Victoria Lickley, Director of Red Kite Teacher Training, expressed how proud she was of the trainees and their efforts.
